Re-imagining Stories
The story changes as we look at ourselves. Too often, however, we establish the stories we tell ourselves through other people’s perspectives.
Taking ownership of the life we choose to lead eliminates long-held beliefs that are not true.
So much of the value we find is reliant on other people’s opinions of us, and it’s an imbalanced paradigm.
No one should have that much power over you except yourself.
One of the ways that we re-imagine the long-held stories is by shifting the perspective of the author. For years, the notion of someone else narrating our lives a la Wonder Years-style was intriguing.
This narration took the attention away from the experiences we had in the past and boiled it down to a black and white perspective.
In this black and white “utopia,” we made definitive either/or choices about the people we needed to be.
You are a cat or a dog person, not both.
Black and white existence is such a limiting perspective to keep.
Restricting possibilities creates the belief that existing in this world boils down to making choices based on one or the other rather than both.
We are both fantastic at baking and terrible at cooking, for example. Such a notion is limiting and creates a “better not even try” mentality.
Nothing in life is that definitive. And, no, other people don’t have it together more than you do.
Other people are just better at hiding the fact that the same restrictions of acceptance imprison them. Therefore, the whole idea of comparing yourself to others is a total sham.
Once you realize this, it is simple to step forward into the future you’ve always wanted but never thought you would have.
Changing how we view ourselves from the way others view us takes the guesswork out of making choices.
Taking a brave step forward in believing in yourself is the best thing you can do for yourself.
