New Dreams
There was a time when all Ben* wanted was to live the life he had – married happily for 16 years and father to three children.
Ben’s business was thriving as he embraced his career as a taxidermist. Then, he began to drink. As time passed, Ben’s façade fell away and revealed a deeply broken person. He struggled to make decisions and had opportunities squandered right before his eyes.
Divorce happened. Suddenly, Ben was living with his aging parents and trying desperately to figure out what happened.
Through the work we did together, Ben discovered that his life was the classic American dream. But this dream was not his. He found that taxidermy was not his life’s passion. His previous marriage had been damaged for years. After years of failed bids for connection, the marriage was not capable of being renewed.
Ben confronted years of fitting his life into someone else’s expectations. Dismantling the stories told to him about who he was, Ben recognized that he did not accept this.
Ben reconnected with his wife and children, but this time, it was different. He did not want to fix their relationship but foster a respectful connection with his children’s mother. They came together to figure out how best to move forward with respect and love.
After establishing the new connection, Ben began exploring who he wanted to be.
Through trial and error, he discovered a love for all things related to sports and writing. He secured a job as a writer for a large newspaper company.
Now he realizes the life he wants and loves, free from fear or living with someone else’s dream. His ex-wife and children are deeply involved in his life without the stress and anxiety that previously loomed over him.
Ben’s story is like those of many of my clients. It’s not that I want to convince you that you are required to alter your entire life to make change happen but to illustrate that anything is possible if you take that first (and often most terrifying) step.
This story is one of the countless occasions where I was privileged to watch it unfold. Often, my clients wanted to realize an alternative way of being but struggled to say goodbye to the old ways of life that no longer served them.
Make no mistake about it; guidance, support, and dismantling dreams to make way for new ones is hard work – but is such a worthy cause for your attention.
It’s time to live the life you were meant to have but felt too fearful to pursue.
